Star Trek, Sept. 8th 1966

'Star Trek is anything but a phenomenon when it debuts tonight (Sept. 8th 1966) on NBC. In it’s first season it ranks a mediocre #52 and is regularly beaten by competitors like Bewitched and My Three Sons.  In successive years NBC shifts its date and timeslot, but audience interest falls even further. The show is finally axed at the end of it’s third season. However, diehard trekkies keep the flame alive. Paramount tries an animated series for a couple of years until it releases its first feature film in 1979. The overwhelming response triggers a steady stream of movies and syndicated series ever since. “Gallivanting around the cosmos,” says William Shatner (a.k.a. Captain Kirk) “is a game for the young.” ‘
